Collaboration across two states: grass from Assam woven in Tamil Nadu. That’s the formula that has worked for Erode-based Nisha, whose kauna reed, or water hyacinth products have found designs and markets far away from where the grass grows.

Nisha, who has started several small businesses earlier, zoned in on working with kauna grass after a brief stint with terracotta, where her interest in sustainable products piqued.

Artisans at work, giving finishing touches to the baskets

Nisha and her team of 50 women artisans weave different styles of bags and baskets for everyday use. It was not an easy path for Nisha, who had to stop her education at Class 10, due to family circumstances. She tried various businesses, even selling products door-to-door, when a chance encounter with kauna grass bags from Assam piqued her interest.

“These baskets are very durable. They are water-resistant, and last for ten years or more. It’s a wonderful product and a lot of people are interested in natural products like this.”

The base for the baskets is made by the Assamese artisans, and Nisha’s artisans then take it forward from there.

Club Artizen features Nisha’s Classic U-carry bag with round handles, and a rectangular storage box.
