When I returned home to India on breaks from the U.S., I would fill up my senses: from a quiet, grey, odourless ambience to a colourful, noisy atmosphere with lots of odours (not all good, to be sure!).
Earlier, instructions to friends’ houses would invariably be something like: past the green house, by the pink gate, etc. Houses had colours on walls, inside and outside. In the U.S. they all looked the same, and were functionally grey!
This colourful facade of homes is actually a step down for India, the home of murals. India’s most famous murals, the Ajanta and Ellora frescoes, are dated from around the 4th century CE. Homes were decorated with art made from rice paste, cow dung, and other household materials.

Ancient Murals

Murals were part and parcel of everyday life in most of tribal and rural India, with Gond, Madhubani, Worli and other art forms primarily used to decorate homes. While some of these art forms are still practiced by the womenfolk in their original form, around the 1980s, some of the art forms jumped off the wall to paper.
Through our focus on bringing Indian art to every Indian’s home, Club Artizen worked with
artists from across the country to create products that best showcase their art form.

Here are a couple of mural art forms Club Artizen has brought to your homes:

Gond:
One of our bestselling products is our handpainted Gond coasters. Our artist can trace the art back in his family for as long as he can remember and has to take up other jobs to keep himself afloat. The art market can be finicky, he says, and he is grateful for the orders that have helped him get back to art! These Gond gifts make perfect sustainable gifts, blending tradition with modern utility.

Madhubani:
Bihar-based Madhubani is considered to have been the fruit of King Janaka asking people of his kingdom to capture the wedding of his daughter Sita to King Rama.

Club Artizen Dry Fruit Gift Box

From that, the art was primarily found on the walls of the houses of the region, with each family having their own special motifs.
Club Artizen works with artists and brings to you the beautiful Madhubani pen stand, which is made of paper mache, and a dry fruit gift box (on bulk order only). These Madhubani gifts not only serve as a functional items but also as a piece of heritage.
